Import and playback MXF files in Autodesk Smoke 2013 on Mac

Summary: Is there an easy way to convert MXF to DNxHD MOV, ProRes MOV, MPEG-2, etc that Smoke supported? This tutorial helps you work with, import MXF files to Smoke 2013 for flawlessly editing on Mac OS X 10.9 (iMac OS X 10.9), Mac OS X10.8, etc.

Autodesk Smoke-unmanged media and managed media

Autodesk Smoke has successfully lived up to for very demanding high-end clients for many years. Smoke takes a different approach to editing. It provides world-class compositing tools all unified in a single package. Rather than spend time and money acquiring plug-ins, everything you need is all in one place.

Unmanaged Media is media that Smoke is not directly managing. This would be media clips like .mov, .r3d, .mxf, that you have imported via the MediaHub and are using the files natively. Unmanaged Media in Smoke is linked to the files original location and not copied. Managed media is media that you may have imported with the “Create Project Media” option selected and will be copied into the Autodesk Media Folder and be transcoded from it’s original format.

Dose Smoke 2013 on Mac support MXF file?

MXFs should import and export and playback in Smoke. But Where do the MXFs come from and the different codec in the MXF maybe incompatible with Smoke. Smoke won't work well with particular MXF codec, such as XDCAM, XAVC, Sony raw MXF, etc. When I try to import XDCAM MXF to Smoke, the files only show up as audio clips.

How to edit MXF video in Autodesk Smoke 2013 on Mac

Smoke cannot see MXF files? For Smoke 2013 native support ProRes video formats and you can import projects from Apple Final Cut Pro X, Final Cut Pro 7 directly, converting MXF to ProRes 422 HQ is a solution. For giving priority to video quality and transcoding settings, Aunsoft TransMXF Pro is a nice choice.
